Aerospace Quality
University of Southern California (USC) Distance Education Network (DEN) a good option? ?
I’m in the process of getting a M.S. in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Houston.
However recently got accepted at USC-DEN.
I am not sure if moving to the USC-DEN is a good option even though USC is ranked in the top 10 graduate engineering schools (vs UH ranked in the bottom tier). My main concerns are:
- The cost of USC will be around 35K more and I’m not sure if the quality of the education and/or the USC name are worth the extra $$$.
- Being able to get the degree online is very convinient (considering work and family) but I have the feeling that it will not be seen as a regular MS (even though USC says there is no difference in the degrees for DEN and on-campus students)
- I want to leave the possibility of applying for PhD open. I think the online degree wouln’t be as good as regular fae-to-face MS for a PhD application.

If you think a PhD may be something you want to pursue in future, then you’re right to be wary of online degrees. But if you have a particular PhD program in mind, go ahead and contact them to discuss the situation. But it seems like most academics still look down on online degrees, no matter where you get them. Thus I’m wary, as you are, of the USC program.
