How to make cheap SCA armor?

I’m joining the local shire of SCA, and I need some armor. I don’t want to spend hundreds of dollars on armor, so I’m looking to make some myself. Any tips on making cheap medieval-like armor?

For my first set, I bought pickle barrel armor from a friend in the SCA. which is yes, essentially a picke barrel crafted into a suit of armor,(except the helmet, which will probably be your most expensive piece) Pickle barrel is actually widley used in the SCA but is normally covered up by a large tunic or such. in my opinion it can look pretty good sometimes, people just prefer to cover it up. If you havent already, I’d suggest going to the SCA practices. Talk to some of the members, theyre usually very helpful people.
