Bark Scales

The leaves on my maple tree died and now the bark is peeling off. There appears to be scales on the bark.?

What should I do?

If you think there is a hazard of it falling down and injuring someone, then call a service that remove trees. Otherwise, just leave it if it doesn’t bother you.
