Freshly planted river birch seems to be dying?

2 weeks ago I planted a nice river birch with 5 trunks in my front yard. I watered it in for about 4 hours at a steady trickle and then left it for two days and watered it in again, then left it for three days. When I went to water it the third time the leaves were all dried up and shriveled as if it were parched, so I watered it deeply every other day for the last week. Still, many of the leaves have turned yellow and fallen off and the tree generally looks like it is going to die. When I planted it my mother was here to help me and, since it was very mildly rootbound she decided to stab the rootball with a 12 inch screwdriver and generally rip around on it, harder than i would have. Do you think this is what is causing this tree to go into shock and/or die? and should I pull it and cut my losses or give it until next year to see what happens?
Note: I planted a river birch in the backyard that was more gently handled a month and a half ago and it is doing wonderfully well.

IT IS PROBABLY JUST THE TIME OF YEAR YOU PLANTED IT, IT IS JUST IN SHOCK, KEEP THE WATER GOING AND JUST GIVE IT ALITTLE MORE TIME TO COME OUT OF IT
