I like it because I can make ice cream or sorbets without having to prefreeze some bowl for hours beforehand. The freezing goes faster if you cool the mixture first in the refrigerator or freezer but you don’t have to. The usefulness of the Cusinart ICE-50BC is you can make more ice cream because you don’t have to wait for a bowl to get cold again so you can make 4-5 quarts in a couple of hours. 

I think it is too much to expect once the ice cream gets hard for the blade to continue turning. You should only let the ice cream get to a soft gelato like texture. You can eat it right then or you can pack the soft ice cream into a container and freeze it some more. If the ice cream got hard in the mixing bowl, it would really be a pain to take it out and pack it in to a container. Also, if one observes ice cream shops that make their own ice cream the shops only let the mixture get soft in the maker and then pour it into 5 gallon tubs. Then they stick them in the freezer.

Review by John ChiTown - I have had it now for about 3 weeks and finally figured out how to use it. 

First off I would have given this a 5 star rating but for the fact that it is quite noisy, especially while churning the ice cream. Once the churning stops the noise level drops dramatically. 

Several people have stated the unit doesn’t produce a product of the proper consistency. They say that the machine turns off before the ice cream is done, thus producing a product with a soupy center. 

It is true that this is the case when the unit stops turning the dasher. However, when the dasher stops turning, doesn’t mean the process if complete. With most recipes the directions recommend setting the timer for 40 to 45 minutes. 

With most recipes, the unit will stop beating the mixture anywhere from 25 to 30 or so minutes – but the chilling compressor will continue the cool down the container and continue to harden the ice cream for the time remaining on the timer. 

You will have to practice a little trial and error with the timer. Not letting the compressor run long enough after the dasher stops and you get a soupy center, let it go too long and you get a solid tub that makes removing the dasher and product difficult. If the former is the case, let the compressor run longer – if the latter, remove the tub and let sit for a minute or two then remove the dasher and ice cream.
