Can Sorbitrate (isosorbide dinitrate) be used sublingualy in any cardiac related chest problems?

My father who is 80 yrs old and having lots of medical complications like osteoarthiritis,high-pressure and diabetes suffers often in the morning from chest pain in the mid chest between the ribs. He takes a lot of medicines for high pressure,diabetes and osteoarthiritis.
I gave him Sorbitrate today when he was feeling pain in the chest. is it due to some heart problem. and is it correct to give sorbitrate for relieving the pain?

Sorbitrate is a coronary vasodilator and it increases the blood supply to the heart by dilating the coronary arteries. If there is pain (angina) due to decreased blood flow to the heart as it occurs in narrowing of coronary arteries and when there is a partial block in the arteries to heart, the blood supply is reduced (what is called ischaemia). It will be effective in such cases as an emergency (as absorption when kept under the tongue is immediate). Typically anginal pain occurs in such people during exercise when the demand for oxygen is more. But in advanced blocks, pain can occur during rest also. Unless contraindicated for a bypass or a stent, dilators are used as tablets one 3 or 4 times a day and sorbitrate is reserved for emergency. In all these cases a blood thinner is administered along with other medicines (like aspirin in small doses). Please do anything after consulting your physician.
