What’s with people using Freudian thinking to interpret Shakespeare’s “Romeo & Juliet”?
I’ve heard someone interpret Act V, scene iii as sexual in nature.
“What’s here? a cup, closed in my true love’s hand?
Poison, I see, hath been his timeless end…” etc. He said that a cup was a symbol for the womb (whatever).
“Yea, noise? then I’ll be brief. O happy dagger!
This is thy sheath! There rust and let me die!”
Dagger. Isn’t that a phalic symbol? Swords/daggers = penises? This thy sheath. Isn’t a vagina sometimes referred to as a “sheath”? And that to “die” was Elizabethan euphemism for “to ***”. “To orgasm.” And the guy who interpreted it brought up the fact that the French call orgasm “le petite mort” or “the little death.”
What’s up with these people using Freudian analysis to interpret Romeo & Juliet? Disgusting, eh? And do you agree or disagree with the interpretation? Why or why not?
