Fossil Bark

Is there an insect that carves interesting markings into trees?
We recently cut down a tree and there are extremely strange markings underneath the bark. The markings look just like a fossil, and there are a lot of markings on the wood. They are very symmetrical in nature. Does anybody know what would make these markings?
Several, in fact. They are the larval forms of bark boring beetles. The beetles lay their eggs through a hole in the bark, and when the larvae hatch, they spread out, eating their way through the inner bark and leaving behind their frass (the scientific name for insect poop). The frass is brown and looks powdery. Sometimes you can find the larvae at the outer tips of the tunnels. These are food for birds like woodpeckers. The trails these leave under the bark are called galleries.
These beetles are responsible for the spread of numerous tree diseases as the adults can carry the infections from tree to tree as the eggs are laid.
