From True Grit: What does “on the scout” mean?
I just saw True Grit last night starring Jeff Bridges as Rooster Cogburn. There is a scene where Rooster and Mattie go into a cabin for shelter and it’s already occupied by 2 miscreants running with a gang the murderer of Mattie’s father is a part of. When Cogburn is trying to obtain the whereabouts of the murderer, the younger, whose leg is injured, is willing to tell all he knows but is stopped by a knife in the chest by his partner in crime. As the young man is dying he requests that his brother be contacted and told of his fate. Rooster asks if he wishes for his brother not to be told of his criminal life. The young man answers with something like, “It don’t matter. He knows I’m on the scout.”
What does the expression, “on the scout” mean? Was he referring to his criminal life or a change of heart he started having at the end of his career in crime? Usually I’m pretty good at understanding context, but in this case, the meaning is unclear to me.
