Is oak suitable for building a log fence? What wood is?

I would like to use the trees from clearing my land to build a jackleg fence around my property. I mostly have post oak but also some juniper, hackberry, and bumelia. I know juniper is the best but what about the others? Will they rot too quickly to make it worth my time?

It is possible to build a quality fence from heartwood of juniper and white oak.

Heartwood from white oak and juniper is considered “resistant or very resistant” to decay. The heartwood will give satisfactory performance. That said, sapwood from either species will perform poorly, like any other untreated sapwood. Hackberry will not perform well, and should not be used unless treated. I would highly recommend using some form of protection in ground contact.

Don’t worry about selling the oak, industry is saturated and nobody is building so prices are quite low. Also, I’m assuming you are from the Southern USA, the oak from the NE is of highly value.
