Fixed Blade Knives
Whether hunting, camping, constructing or simple day-to-day tasks, having a quality and well-made knife is incredibly handy and useful. Two main types of knives that meet these needs, in various aptitudes, are the fixed blade knives and the folding knives. The only thing that they have in common, is the ability to cut, otherwise these knives are completely different and used for a variety of duties.
If someone is looking for strength in a knife, as well as a one-piece sturdy and long-lasting knife, fixed blades knives are the ideal investment. These knives come in different lengths, with no folding parts, and must be stored within a sturdy sheath for safety and portability. Also, because of the fact that fixed blade knives are one continuous piece, they are much easier to clean without worry of dirt, debris, fur, shavings, etc. becoming trapped within the folding handle, such as with the folding knives. In addition to the strength of the fixed blade knives, there are also interchangeable blades available to accommodate the multitude of tasks that you may want to perform with your knife.
On the flip side, folding knives are very convenient to take along and carry inside a pocket or tool belt, glove box or just about anywhere. Because it is a flip, the blade stores right inside the handle for easy safety and portability. This type of knife is also the common “norm” and most accepted in society as being used as a tool, rather than a possible weapon of sorts.
Folding knives come in two different types: lock-back and pocket. Lock-back blades make for easy one-person and one-handed jobs. These types of knives also aid in safety, as they are not as likely to fold while being used because of their locking mechanism. Pocketknives, however, are a bit more compact and versatile. No matter the style of folding knife chosen, it is important to choose one that is made with high quality materials, paying particularly close attention to the blade pivot and lock spring, the area in which folding knives show the most weakness, compared to the fixed blade knives.
While fixed blade knives are much more rugged and durable, folding knives are an excellent choice for convenience and smaller tasks. The ideal would be to have both knives on hand to met every task and job that comes up and must be dealt with – from hunting and fishing to electrical work and cutting open packages or twine.
From Gerber Blades, Browning, Cold Steel to Winchester, there is a vast range of fixed blade knives as well as folding knives on the market to choose from. High quality and dependability are important and standard items to pay close attention to no matter which form you decide on. For outdoor, hunting, fishing, hiking, camping and other recreational activities, the ideal is to have both types of knives within easy range to handle both large jobs such as skinning to smaller jobs such as cutting fishing line.
Fixed blade knives and folding knives each have their own unique purpose, however both complement one another perfectly and make any job simpler and easier to deal with.
