How to Decorate with Old China Plates

Rather than simply throwing your old china plates away, why not use them to decorate different rooms in your house? One of the best ways to cut costs when decorating your home is to reuse those items you already have. With just a little creativity, you can use old china plates to add to the dcor of your home.

Make a Mosaic Table from Old China Plates
Dont toss those old chipped or broken plates in the garbage. Rather, break them up further so you can use them to make a mosaic table from all the broken pieces.

• First, break pieces of china into smaller pieces.
• Then take the pieces and arrange them on a table with a flat surface, such as a coffee table or side table.
• Glue the pieces of the plates onto the surface of the table making a mosaic pattern.
• You can seal the pieces in place using grout, giving the table a finished appearance.
• You can arrange the pieces in whatever pattern you like, and you might even use color grout to give the table some additional character.

Display Old China Plates on a Shelf
If your old china plates have character, why not put them out on a shelf? You dont have to limit your use of china plates as dcor items to the dining room. If they fit the style of the room, you can display them in the living room, the kitchen, and even the bedroom.

Its best to find a shelf that matches the style of the plates. For instance, for old antique-looking plates, use a distressed wood shelf. You can really give the area a unique style by using all different sizes of the plates.

Hang Old China Plates on the Wall
Plate hangers are available at craft and home stores and will allow you to easily hang any plate securely on the wall. Although this is perhaps the most popular way of decorating with china plates, you can create a unique look by putting all different types and sizes of plates together in a single area. You might want to try to find other plates at consignment shops and flea markets to mix in with your old china to create a trendy dcor space.

Paint the Old China Plates
If your old plates are a solid color, particularly if theyre white, you can paint the plates to match the dcor of your room. Using acrylic paint, you can either paint them all one color, or if you are creative, then you can paint pictures or patterns on them. Once theyre painted to fit the dcor, you can hang them on the wall or put them on a shelf in your dining room or kitchen. This is a great way, both to use old china plates as well as to give your room a new look. Your kids might want to paint a couple of old plates themselves. Then you can hang them in the kids bedroom as a cute art project.
