Hangers Pair

Doing some welding, what material for the rod?
My ladyfriend has a favorite pair of work overalls. The shoulder straps have a metal loop that hooks onto a button on the front of the overalls. Both of the metal loops have broken, and the straps don’t stay onto the buttons. The metal loops are not magnetic.
Can I use a coat hanger with a 220 stick welder to fix the straps on the overalls. I have plenty of 6011, 7014 etc rod, but I thought that I should use the same sort of metal to fix the straps that they are made from.
Do NOT try to “weld” on small metal parts ATTACHED to cloth.
There is no way to keep the heat from being transmitted, by conduction, to the cloth which will result [in the best case] in scorching the cloth.
In the worst case scenario you will burn the cloth!!!!!
