What Is Skateboarding?

At some point we’ve all no doubt tried our hand (or should that be feet?) at skateboard, This is an extreme sport that became popular in the eighties, an American export that revolved around streetwise urbanites navigating the urban sprawl on a wooden board with two wheels attached. Clearly skateboarding was never just that handy alternative to walking, it was so much more than that, a tool through which the young generations expressed themselves.

Because of the skateboards massive potential for trickery and unabated creativity, along with its strong ties to music, performance art and the trendy extreme sports market as a whole, it became a credible sport unto itself and quickly grew a vast following. So popular was skateboarding that towns had problems with skaters using the pavements and disrupting pedestrians.

Said parks not only provided a place for skaters to practice but also functioned as social meeting places where like minded individuals could congregate. Boarding soon become popular worldwide due to Tony Hawk and his daredevil stunts, the American family man, sponsored by Quicksilver rocketed to fame very quickly, gaining massive publicity from his popular self titled video game

Boarding, although not as mainstream as it once was, still thrives in small pockets. There is a clear and obvious skater fashion sense, epitomised by oversized trainers mens socks pulled up, bold t shirts made by brands like Fenchurh and Mambo and beanie hats. Intricately fashioned facial hair as well as piercing, Oakley sunglasses, a devil-may care attitude, and a penchant for punk rock define the typical skater.

Skaters often have a reputation as low-lives or bums, by no means violent, but drifters and underachievers, perhaps the modern day equivalent of hippies. One thing we can certainly say is that they’re not polluting the environment unlike other less liked sub cultutral groups like boy racers with their fuel guzzling mean machines.
