African Safari – Impala Hunting
African Impala Hunting
Hunting Impala is one of the first animals many hunters coming the Africa will consider, and is often used to start your hunt.
The Impala also know as the Rooibok or “red buck” by Afrikaans is an essential antelope to hunt in Southern Africa. The Impala is widely used as a stable camp food for the hunters, or often hunted to provide meat to use as bait when hunting Leopard. A sub-species, the Black Faced Impala is identified by the black patch on their nose and face. The Black Faced Impala is found more northerly areas of Angola and Namibia.
The Impala is a graceful, medium sized antelope, roam open woodlands and bush or the scrub in herds. Impala will browse and graze, however will never be found far from water, as the Impala must drink daily, only the males have the large lyre shaped horns.
Impala hunting is at its best in the autumn rut when the largest rams can be found breeding within the herd. The Rooibok’s has a great sense of hearing and smell, in addition to great eyesight which all make it essential to be skilful and cautious when you close in on the hunt.
Impala are most active during the cooler times of the day, early morning and late afternoon, a skilful hunter will place themselves to ambush the Impala near their feeding areas.
It is important to be cautions when hunting Impala, once startled the they tend to herd tightly together, increasing the chances of hitting more than one Impala with a single shot.
The best calibre for hunting Impala is .22 which is legal in most of Southern Africa, although 6mm, 7mm, or even up to the 30 calibre round-nose bullets are a better choice, if you want a clean kill to avoid having to track the wounded animal.
Although a medium sized antelope, the Impala is tough for its size, a higher shot at the heart or lungs is best to ensure a kill. However, if you are after it for the meat, a lung shot will spoil the meat. Instead aim one third directly up the fore-leg, to the rear of a lung shot, or a neck shot can be taken anywhere on the long neck. A head shot should only be attempted by an experienced good shot.
Hunting Impala will be a great introduction to hunting in Africa!
