The Opening Of My Novel – “The letter” Chapter One, any opinion?

The second letter she had sent me was the last one I received. I stuck my finger into the top of the envelope and very carefully slid it along to open it. I pulled it out, and a small folded-brownish paper slipped through my clumsy fingers as I held it, skidding wildly across the wooden desk. I reached down to pick it up, unfolding it, feeling the ink of her eagle-feather quill when she had pressed it against the paper in slender hand. I pushed my glasses up the bridge of my nose and started reading it

Well I’m curious about why you’re starting it about the second letter and what happened to the first?

Did the MC pull out one thing, and the brown paper skidding across the desk is something else? Or was it dropped? How does paper skid wildly?

All in all not bad, but a few things had me confused.
