Art Review: This Week’s Visual Arts Round-Up From The Arts Desk

Fisun Güner’s art review on Tate Liverpool’s exhibition on the works of Rene Magritte – a Belgian Surrealist – has made the headlines at The Arts Desk. Güner believes Magritte to be more interesting and layered than Dali, making this a must-see exhibition.

Alan Yentob’s ‘Imagine: Iraq in Venice’, an episode from BBC Two’s ‘Imagine’ documentary series, was recently reviewed by Howard Male. Male notes that it’s the best in the series so far. Following six exiled Iraqi artists who are now creating work freely, the documentary follows them to Venice, where they’ve been invited to the Venice Biennale. After viewing, Male pondered why there weren’t any female artists?

In London galleries news, the Victoria & Albert Museum hosted its biennial Jameel Prize, which celebrates contemporary art and design that’s been inspired by Islamic tradition. Marina Vaizey found plenty to interest her. Although nothing was designed to shock, each artist managed to appropriate history to create a new piece of art that was fresh and original.

Meanwhile, Terry Friel’s report – The Arts Desk in Kuala Lumpur – describes how the Annexe Gallery dares to speak out against the country’s crack-down on artistic freedom by hosting plays, discussions and visual arts exhibitions that criticise and ask questions.

Following Lucian Freud’s death earlier this month at the age of 88, four writers at The Arts Desk pay tribute to the devoted figurative painter. Fisun Güner recalls being blown away by his early portraits, while Marina Vaizey reminds us he was also known for his colourful personal life, which only added to his allure. Josh Spero’s admiration for the painter gradually developed during a retrospective in Venice, while Jasper Rees recalls an interview with novelist and playwright David Storey, who studied under Freud and remembers him as a likeable, eccentric and rather intimidating man.
