What Are the Options Available For Treating Hyperhidrosis

When it is clear that other excessive sweating treatment options are not providing results, you might need to consider surgical options.

There are a number of surgical excessive sweating treatments out there.  Be sure that you start by consulting your physician about hyperhidrosis surgery options.

You should know up front that there are surgical options for excessive treatment that involve the removal of the body’s sweat glands to more serious and invasive procedures like ETS, which is short for endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy.  This last surgical option is one most physicians discourage.  It is considered a last resort because of the serious side effects of the procedure, such as compensatory sweating.

A surgery is termed local because it is performed at the site of the excessive sweating.  The three types of local surgery approved for excessive sweating treatment are excision, curettage, and liposuction.  All of them have been used to treat excessive underarm sweating.  All options involve the removal of the body’s sweat glands.  With excision, the physician would cut out those gland affected by hyperhidrosis.  With curettage, the process is more of a controlled scraping of the sweat glands.  Liposuction is easy enough to understand; in this surgery, the sweat glands are removed with suction.

As previously mentioned, most dermatologists are slow to suggest ETS as an excessive sweating treatment because of its reputation.  Endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy is an invasive surgery in which the doctor is attempting to interrupt the transmission of nerve impulses in the spine to the glands.  In effect, the surgery’s purpose is to “turn off” these signals so they can’t “turn on” the sweat glands.

ETS is invasive because it involves the insertion of a miniature camera through an incision made into the chest via the underarm.  Additionally, one of the lungs is collapsed to give physicians access to the proper nerve paths in order to destroy them and provide a permanent excessive sweating treatment.  The surgery is typically performed on both sides of the body.  ETS has been used mostly for the treatment of severe palm and underarm sweating.

The side effects of ETS known as compensatory sweating have been mentioned in passing.  It will often appear on the face, chest, back, abdomen, legs, and even buttocks.  There is a chance that this secondary sweating can be worse that the initial problem.

Understanding more about the surgical options, you may better understand what surgery will mean to you.  As an excessive sweating treatment, surgery really should be the final option.  Once you have gone through every other option for excessive sweating treatment including Botox injections, prescription antiperspirants, iontophoresis, and anticholinergics, you may then start looking into surgical ones.

You should talk to your doctor before you begin making choices about what sort of surgery you wish to use to treat your excessive sweating condition.  Surgery should be taken serious because it does have definite risks.  Concerning ETS, you must definitely weigh the risks and rewards carefully.  The doctor will be able to explain the full range of options available to you so you do not make hasty decisions.  You probably understand that spending a little time examining what is entailed with surgery may help you avoid a mistake with far-reaching consequences.

Dune (Extended Edition)

Dune (Extended Edition)

$27.98

Even more than most of David Lynch’s deliberately bizarre and idiosyncratic movies, Dune is a “love-it-or-hate-it” affair. An ambitious, epic, utterly mind-boggling–and, let’s admit it, all-out weird–adaptation of Frank Herbert’s classic science fiction novel, Dune remains one of the most controversial films in the director’s exceedingly provocative career. The story (if Dune can be said to have…
