What kind of knifes should I use to carve a block of bass wood?

I am 14 and I have to do a project and carve a block of wood into a piece of a totem pole. What kind of knife should I use?

Basswood is harder than Balsa, so I think a sharp pocket type of knife would do, along with sharp hand chisels for the finer details.
