What should I put on my necklace?

I want to make a necklace for someone and I’m interested in the water, whales, dolphins. I’m a supporter of marine life conservation and their activists. What can I make to put on a sea-themed necklace or bracelet for a guy? For the material I’m thinking about something made of leather or cotton cord, multiple wraps to make it into almost a wide-band bracelet (short vambrace?) or for a necklace: a simple double strand, loose-weaved lace. I just can’t think of what to use as the adornment. It should be a piece that offers awareness for these themes, but not fancy or girly… ideas please! Opinions from guys, especially if you’ve got some sort of “awareness” jewlery/good luck charms.
