Making Beeswax Candles Made Easy
People have highly valued beeswax candles since they were first made. When all lighting at night was by candles, the most affordable material was tallow. Tallow burned with a heavy soot and had an unpleasant odor. In contrast candles made beeswax were clean and fragrant. We have a lot more choices today yet beeswax remains the preferred natural alternative to petroleum based paraffin. Here’s how to make beeswax candles using a modern method that is very easy to learn.
In the past, the most common way of making beeswax candles is either by dipping or using a mold. I’m about to teach you a much simpler method that uses sheets of beeswax.
Beeswax sheets for candle making are typically 10 x 16″ in size. They commonly have a textured pattern embossed on the surface. A characteristic of beeswax is that it remains flexible at room temperature, which makes it possible to produce a candle without melting the wax and using a mold.
Start by laying a sheet of beeswax on a smooth, flat surface. some people keep a large cutting board just for this purpose, but you can start out using your kitchen table. the candle be as high as a sheet of waxes wide. You can adjust the height of the candle by cutting the sheet to the desired width.
Lay the wick along the height edge of the candle, trimming it so ittle extends beyond each end. Gently press the wick into the edge of the wax, leaving a little bit extending beyond each end.
Now gently and carefully roll the sheet of wax around the wick. Use a firm but gentle pressure and take care to press evenly along the length of the candle. If you press too hard you risk distorting the candle.
In cold weather, the wax may be a little stiff. If this happens, you can use a hairdryer on a low setting to warm the wax. Be careful as you do this – too much heat will ruin the candle.
If you want a thicker candle then you get using one sheet, simply continue with another. When you’re done press the edge of the final sheet into the body of the candle and smooth it out. Again, be careful as you do this to avoid distorting the candle.
