Be A Hero In A Medieval Knight Costume

Is there a woman alive who hasn’t dreamt of being rescued by a chivalrous knight in his shining armour? Of being carried off by him on his reliable white horse? What better way to fulfil a woman’s fantasy than dressing up in a Medieval knight costume for Halloween or other dress up event.

Where does the romantic ideal of a knight in shining armor come from? It comes from the knight-errant, a sort of medieval righteous vigilante who wandered the land looking for adventures. He wanted to prove his abilities as a knight. One famous knight-errant was Don Quixote from the famous book by Miguel de Cervantes. The novel relates his various quests. Ever dreamt of performing noble exploits like a knight-errant? You must do it in the name of a lady to fulfil the romantic and heroic ideals.

The life of a knight began with earnest training which commenced when he was a boy. The boy would be sent to a castle to be trained as a page in addition to learning the skills he would need such as riding, fighting with a spear and sword, and wrestling. The next step would be to become a squire for a full knight. This usually happened when he was aged about 15. What duties did a squire have? He was basically a dogsbody for his knight, preparing his meals, keeping his armour in top condition and caring for his horse. He would also begin learning to wield a sword and wear the heavy armor of a knight. At the age of 20, if worthy, he would get the status of knight with his own set of armor.

It might be fun to be in full armor so that no one knows who you are. Of course, armor is very heavy and restrictive. It takes some getting used to and some strength. There are therefore many other great medieval knight costumes available that are a little less restricting. There are some absolutely amazing costumes that look like you are wearing chainmail, usually a tunic and helmet made of interlinked and riveted rings of metal used as defensive armor. A sword and shield is essential for any self-respecting knight. He’s always prepared to defend himself and to rescue damsels in distress.
