Medieval Shields Odyssey from Warfare Solutions to Decorative Items

During Middles ages, medieval soldiers used suits of armor and medieval shields to safeguard themselves from injuries and opponent’s attack. These shields were considered as an important defensive tool and were basically held in hands to ward off the opponent’s blow. These shields were found in variety of shapes and sizes such as longer triangle, round, oblong etc. During medieval period, potential materials like wood, metal, leather, etc were used in their manufacturing.

With the passage of time, the usage of medieval shields has undergone a paradigm shift. Nowadays, these shields are often used as an attractive house decorative item. The time has gone when people preferred to decorate their houses with portraits and photos. Nowadays, in order to add a refreshing and appealing look to their house, people prefer to add these shields on their house walls. • Kite Shields- Kite shields were the only medieval weapon used by the soldiers in the early phase of middle Ages. Generally, it was of round shape from the top and tapered from the bottom providing body cover.
  • Heater Shields- This kind of shield was closely associated with those soldiers who rode on horseback. They were smaller in size as compared to other shields.
  • Buckler Shields- It was a metal shield of round shape which could be easily hung from a belt. This kind of shield was specifically used for hand-to-hand combat.
  • Passive or Wall Shields- This type of medieval shield was used by archers as their defensive tools.
  • Target Shields- Unlike the other medieval shields mentioned above, it was a traditional Scottish shield of round shape.

On Medieval shields, different kinds of decorative symbols are used such as a heraldic design, a knight’s coat of arms, etc. These symbols are engraved purposefully on shields in order to recognize foes from friends in the battlefield.
