Singer Ronnie James Dio Passes Away At 67

Ronnie James Dio, the singer, has passed away at 67. He had been diagnosed with stomach cancer in 2009. Dio was a legend in hard rock and heavy metal. He had been the singer for Rainbow, Black Sabbath, and was successful in his own right with solo works. This year has taken it’s toll on metal, as Peter Steele of Type O Negative.

Ronnie James Dio

Ronnie James Dio was born Ronald James Padovona in 1942 in the state of New Hampshire. He attributed his vocal prowess and technique to having played several brass instruments in his youth. He formed the band Elf in the early 70s, after more than a decade of grinding out a living around New England. After being discovered by Deep Purple, Elf was taken out on tour with them several times.

Rainbow

Ritchie Blackmore hired Elf, including Ronnie James Dio, as the rest of what would be called Rainbow, after he quit Deep Purple. Aside from his musical contributions, he also is credited for popularizing the “metal horns,” otherwise known as “devil horns,” which he picked up from his Italian grandmother. The hand gesture is called “malocchio,” which gained popularity as “the horns.” {It was adopted as the sign of The Metal}.

Black Sabbath

Dio left Rainbow after having creative differences with Ritchie Blackmore, and auditioned for Black Sabbath as they had fired Ozzy Osbourne recently at the time. Dio was hired, and stayed for two albums, “Mob Rules” and “Heaven and Hell.” Despite the firing of the iconic original singer, the albums were quite successful. He struck out on his own after the release of “Live Evil,” a live record.

Holy Diver

After leaving Black Sabbath, Ronnie James Dio got a group of musicians together as the band Dio and recorded “Holy Diver,” long considered a classic. The album had two stand out hits with the title track and “Rainbow in the Dar,” which are still played on rock radio stations. He reunited with Black Sabbath briefly and recorded the album “Dehumanizer,” and continued releasing solo albums until 2006.

Heaven and Hell

While Ozzy Osbourne wasn’t working with the band, Black Sabbath and Ronnie James Dio started working together again. It was decided they would work under a different name to avoid potential conflicts. Ronnie James Dio, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Vinny Appice would instead tour as Heaven and Hell, recording a live album and in 2009, released “The Devil you Know,” a brand new studio album. In 2009, Dio was diagnosed with stomach cancer and the band went on hiatus. On the Dio website on May 16, 2010, his wife announced that he had passed away. Ronnie James Dio will be sorely missed as one of the greats of the last 30 years, a man of myth and legend.

Stanley Kubrick’s 1987, penultimate film seemed to a lot of people to be contrived and out of touch with the ’80s vogue for such intensely realistic portrayals of the Vietnam War as Platoon and The Deer Hunter. Certainly, Kubrick gave audiences plenty of reason to wonder why he made the film at all: essentially a two-part drama that begins on a Parris Island boot camp for rookie Marines and abrupt…
