Remington 7400 Opinions?
I just finished reassembling and cleaning on a Remington 7400 in 30-06. 10 round metal clip. 3X9X 40 scope on high rise bases and tru-glo iron sights. Was delighted it cracked off a blank and cycled. My first semi-auto Remington. Got it for the caliber and price was good.
My question? What to expect from it performance and durability wise? More used to bolt actions. In civilian and mil-surp. Have not fired it yet. Picked up some Winchester 180g soft points for it.
My father bought me one about 20 years ago chambered in the 308 Win.
In my youth, I was an avid handloader. With my best handloads, I was getting about 1 MOA with it give or take depending on the day.
I found my 7400 to be very particular with ammo. Pretty much everything I put through my rifle cycled just fine, but most ammo would shoot 2 to 3 MOA in my rifle. Basically any ammo I put through the rifle was accurate enough for hunting, but I was never satisfied with “good enough”.
I’ve hunted through some cold days with the rifle and would often leave it outside overnight at the camp I used to hunt at (no firearms were allowed inside the sleeping quarters). The rifle always functioned when I pulled the trigger (even when it was hitting -10F below).
The only problem I had with the rifle was that we got it directly from Remington via a friend who ordered from them. The spring and slide mechanisms contained in the forearm of the rifle was coated with what appeared to be a graphite based protectent of some sort (kind of like cosmoline, but no where near as messy or difficult to remove). We did not realize this and when we took it to the range, I was having all kinds of cycling problems with my rifle. Once we found the issue and cleaned it up, everything worked fine since then.
My 7400 was what I used to carry in bear country when I was in my early teens and had not moved up to the 30-06 and magnum rounds yet. I like my rifle, but I was not impressed enough to buy another one.
I was not impressed with the extended magazines I bought for my rifle, but the 10 round mags I bought were made of plastic. I found they fed unreliably. The metal ones might work better (I hope they do for you) but I pretty much stuck with the factory mags in my rifle.
