How to deter/prevent puma attacks while hiking alone at dusk/night?
I’ve searched google too long and all I get back is “don’t hike alone” and “don’t travel at dawn or dusk”. Gee, thanks horrible copy/paste advice articles.
I’m doing a long hike over a short time that will require hiking during civil dawn and dusk, maybe into the night. I will be alone in puma country and hiking at a fast pace. Every 15 miles is a trailhead (thanks to perpendicular road development) so it’s fairly civilized, but the length of the trail runs in wilderness preserve. Aside from my belt knife and a smaller one on my ankle, what deterent can I utilize to avoid these risky hours?
(One interesting, albeit unorthadox, deterent I found on a random forum was to put a scary halloween mask on the back of your head, since pumas ambush from behind.)
Bring something that makes a lot of noise, like an air horn or just whatever tin camping gear you can bang together. Every now and then, make a loud noise, which usually startles most wildlife.
I don’t recommend just yelling or shouting randomly, though, as you could unintentionally sound like a wounded or frightened animal, in which case, it’s dinner time.
Also, pumas/cougars/mountain lions can strike at various times of the day – don’t assume you’re only in danger at night.
It may be wise just to stop & make camp at dusk. If not to to avoid predators, at least to get proper rest. Exhaustion can kill you just as easily as a cat the size of a Harley.
