Did the spectators at the Roman Gladiator fights have to pay addmission?

I know the Collisium held 50,000 people, but was it free?
did it cost a chicken or something?

Admission was free – one of the perks of the Roman empire. It is possible that they may have charged for certain special events, but for the most part the emperor paid for the shows. For about the first three months after it opened they had daily shows with exotic animals (tigers, lions, and such) versus gladiators. There were no zoos, so most people had never seen tigers or elephants before.

Seating was around 45,000, but it held up to 70,000 if enough people were standing. I imagine it must have been quite a sight back in its heyday. It is still pretty spectacular, even in ruins.
