As a primary profession, Leatherworking almost exclusively depends on skinning as it uses mostly all the items obtained by skinning the creatures of the wild. Like a number of other professions, Leatherworking doesn’t require any special tool or instrument to create leather-based stuff. So long as the leatherworker has the pattern he needs (the counterpart being in other profession is the ‘recipe’) and the ingredients required by the recipe, he can create products anytime and everywhere he likes.

There is an exemption though with a special tool which only skilled engineers can produce. This is the Salt Shaker.

Since Leatherworking seems to depend almost entirely on the materials obtained via skinning, skinning is the top recommendation as a complementary profession. This allows not only the availability of supplies but also the convenience of not having to depend on the Auction House for materials. If you choose to level up in leatherworking purely via the Auction House, you will have to prepare for the expenses of doing so.

Also, other benefits to pairing up skinning with leatherworking include.

{Free patterns} – Most professions get their recipes from their trainers or at the Auction House. If you’re a leatherworker AND a skinner, you will have the benefit of literally farming for patterns. You get them for free if you skin the right humanoids, mobs, monsters or wild creatures.

{Availability of materials} – It isn’t always that the materials you need are available at the Auction House. If you’re dependent on the Auction House, you will find yourself at stand still at times because there will be times when the materials you need are not available. If you’re skinning, though, a few mobs killed can yield the stuff you need.

It makes sense for Shamans, Druids,, Rogues, and Hunters to use leatherworking as a second profession. After all, they depend on leather for their armors. Having some free stuff always pays a long way in the game.

Leatherworking is in a league of its own in that it is one of the very few professions that allows for specializations at higher levels. After meeting the required levels for the profession, Leatherworkers can begin specializing in any of three schools of specialization – Dragonscale Leatherworking, Tribal Leatherworking, and Elemental Leatherworking. Each of these specializations allow for the creation of special armors sets that are soulbound to their wearers.
