Pickaxes And Mattocks – ToolsRUs
Pickaxes and mattocks come in very handy for doing certain jobs when you are working in your garden or landscape area. These tools give you an incredible amount of leverage when digging in the dirt, cutting out roots or getting underneath a stone paver, among other things. You typically use a pickaxe to break up stone or concrete, while a mattock is the tool of choice for turning over soils or prying up bricks and other things. If you do a lot of work in your lawn and garden, a mattock is an indispensable tool.

Pickaxes and mattocks consist of two primary parts. A long handle made of wood, fiberglass or lightweight metal provides the grip as well as the ability to swing the tool effectively. The versatile head of each tool is made of strong, hard steel and fastened to the working end of the handle. Both tools are double sided. This allows you to flip the tool over and gain the advantage of a different sized cutter. These tools are double sided also to provide a counterweight during use. One side of a pickaxe features a curved spike. The spike is good for breaking up stone, concrete or other hardened surfaces. Pickaxes feature a second spike on the opposite side, but one that is flatter and wider at the tip. Use this side to pry up stones or pavers or cut through tough roots.
Similar to a pickaxe, mattocks also have long handles and double-sided heads. Two primary types are used: cutter mattocks and pick mattocks. Both feature an adze on one side. With a flat, wide blade, an adze is kind of like a hoe, for its blade is oriented at 90 degrees to the handle. Good for breaking up tough or rocky soil, pick mattocks feature a spiked opposite end. Cutter mattocks have an axe end opposite the adze. Narrower than a standard axe, the axe end is oriented along the same plane as the handle, at 90 degrees to the adze end. Use a cutter mattock to dig trenches, loosen soil, turn over a garden bed or chop through tough roots in the ground.
