Ebony and ivory! The different pianos and keyboards

When most of us think about a piano, we think of a concert pianist playing a grand piano, but there are two or three types of piano, here we will discuss them, from the grand piano, to the upright piano to the digital keyboard.

First piano up for review is the one we’re all picturing in our head, the grand piano. The giant size of the grand piano is what helps it mantain its monsterous sound as it needs longer strings, which reduce lower frequencies and. A smaller piano, like a baby grand, and the boudoir grand piano will use thicker strings than the concert grand to keep the tension within the strings, allowing for clarity in the sound. String tension would be lowered if a smaller piano used the concert grands piano strings, making the sound muddy and possibly unplayable. Size can go from 2-3ms for the concert grand piano, to the 1-2ms of a boudoir, to the slightly smaller (but still large) grand piano.

The ‘upright’ piano is probably what most people have when they mention having a piano (Nothing wrong with that). With its frame and strings horizontally housed inside the piano, the upright piano is slightly smaller than a grand piano, but can still be 45 inches or taller.

Often (and rather naively) mistaken for another keyboard, the electronic piano has the food pedals to control frequency and pitch that they piano has that the keyboard doesnt. Unfortunetly they just dont sound as good as an acoustic piano, even with the advances in digital technology.

And as for those digital keyboards…..

Compared to the piano, the keyboard is smaller, cheaper and easier to carry around, so will probably be the closest thing most of us will ever have to owning a piano. Digital techonology allows the keyboard to carry hundreds of sounds within its frame, from steel drum sound, to church organ to grand piano, all in one shell.
