type of steel used for real plate armor?

can anyone tell me or direct me to a site that tells me what kind of steel was used for plate mail for knights, i need thinkness, tensile strength, the exact type of steel( not heat treated, tempered or anything like that, the actually type) or an equivalent type of steel used today.

That depends on the “when.” Even In medieval times, technology was continually improving.

Armour during the age of knighthood was made of wrought iron.

Wrought iron had been produced in Europe since before the Roman empire.

The earliest process used to create bona-fide “steel” in western Europe was invented at the turn of the 1600′s. This was known as the “cementation” process. However, this was several hundred years *after* heavily armored knights became obsolete, (due to improved military tactics, and a little bit later, guns.)

Note that before the cemetation process was invented, decent-quality steel would still have been available in Europe as an import product. This was first traded on the silk road from India and China,…… later produced in the near east by Islamic countries from 1000AD onward. But this imported steel would have been a luxury item. Armor made of imported *steel* would have cost nearly a king’s ransom.
