Straight Razor

Straight Razor
Do you get a better shave with a straight razor then you do with a Gillette or Shick razor?

I see some barber shops still offer that. with a straight razor does the stubble grow back slower? I’m thinking of going and getting a shave.

This is an excellent question. In my humble opinion yes it is better. I think many men are finding that the modern disposable or cartridge razor just doesn’t do the job that a good old fashioned straight razor can. In a world where technology is running away with it’s self, sometimes we find that if something ain’t broke, don’t fix it. The straight razor has been around for thousands of years. It’s hard to argue with that kind of track record.

The Gillette and Schicks that have multiple blades are designed for the fast paced guy who doesn’t have time to shave or never learned to shave properly. In essence, they’re made to be idiot proof. While they can give you an “okay” daily shave, I find they have many cons. First of all is their expense. Those replacement cartridges aren’t cheap. With what I used to spend on replacement blades, I could buy a new straight razor every year although you really only need one (or two because it’s cool) for the rest of your life. Another thing is they tend to clog up easily and I can’t get the whiskers and gunk out from between the blades with out cutting my fingers to shreds. Also, because they sometimes cut the whiskers below the skin, you frequently end up with in grown hairs, a.k.a. razor bumps.

Straight razors are a bit of work to maintain and learn to use properly but once you do, WOW what a shave! Smooth, close and comfortable. I’ve tossed out my old 4 bladed razor and now only use straight razors.

I also would recommend getting a barber shave if you have a place that still offers them. The hot steam towels and lather are very soothing. It was one of the ways that a man used to treat himself before it was “O.K.” to go to a salon.

I got interested in using a straight razor after reading an article in a magazine. Then I remembered that my dad still had my great grandfather’s razor. When I told him of my interest he gave it to me. Not only is it a family heirloom but with out a doubt it gives me the closest shave ever. If you’re really interested check out some of the excellent websites on the subject like Straight Razor Place. There is a lot of great information and helpful gentlemen who can start you off on the right foot.
