Tanned Knife

Tanned Knife
How to skin and tan a small mammal hide?

In the wilderness, with a knife and things you’d find in the forest.

Ive heard about using brains but I don’t know much about that.

OK Kid, ready for this?….
skin the animal, scrape the membrane from the inside of hide completely, then stretch the hide out to dry , in the mean time chop open scull take out brains and keep in the paunch of the animal in a cool dry place, when hide is dry and hard, lay hide on a log and with hair side up scrape all the hair off( if you want) / with hair scraped off you are now ready to tan, / lay hide on dry ground and build a small fire, heat the paunch with the brains with about 1/2 cup of water and squoosh the brains up with your fingers till the consistancy of a goo, then work solution into hide both sides twice at least
/ Then wring out completely and keep wringing the hide out till absolutely dry….then sew two sides up with some of the sinew from the meat so you have an open area for smoke to enter …like a sock.
then dig a trench and cover with rocks to make a tunnel and cover with dirt. Do this on the side of a steep hill…at the bottom of the trench build a fire box in the dirt and at the top make a hole…you are going to suspend the hide with the opening about a foot over the hole useing a tripod made of three sticks, this is to let the smoke fill the hide and saturate it leaving the smoke rezin to seal the hides fibers from water and shrinkage……..Ok at the bottom of the trench using rotten wood build a small smokey smudge and let the smoke go up your make shift chimney ..DO NOT LET IT BURST INTO FLAME ! if it does it will scortch the hide and ruin it…the smoke should be warm not hot…smoke hide inside and out and wash in a clean stream and you now have a tanned hide injun style…..dont forget to work this by hand to soften it…takes a bit of bloody knuckels but worth it.
