Things To Think About When Looking At Outdoor Backpacks

Outdooring is a sport that is becoming more and more popular. Spending time camping and hiking and backpacking through the back country is a way for people to get back to nature and enjoy spending time with friends or even going solo. When you are ready to get new equipment, you will want to know what to think about when you are looking for the best outdoor backpacks.

Deciding what you will be using it for is the first step. You may have several outdoor backpacks and are ready to get one that will work for those longer trips of a week or more. This type of pack will need to be large enough to hold all the gear you require for your several-day adventure. This part of the selection process is the determination of the amount of volume you will need. Since expedition backpacks hold 60 liters and up, you will need to decide how far up you need to go. If you are hauling your Dutch oven everywhere you go and have a big tent, you will need more volume than if you bring a down bag and roast your food over a fire on a stick.

You are the only one who can truly determine the amount of gear you will need to take. Don’t worry, however, there are outdoor backpacks designed to hold every bit of gear you may ever want to take. Some are described as big enough to carry your pony. Once you have made the decision on volume, it is time to look at some of the other aspects of the packs you are considering.

If you are planning an arctic excursion, you will need to bring along such things as crampons, snowshoes, and an ice axe. These don’t fit very well into just any backpack, but there are some outdoor backpacks that are designed for specialized gear like this. They have specially made pockets as well as equipment straps and bungee cords to hold whatever you need. The best thing is that they are also designed to add these pieces of equipment without throwing off the center of balance or upsetting the load distribution of the rest of the pack.

You may wonder about the waterproofing of most outdoor backpacks. They are generally water resistant, and some are more resistant than others, but few are truly waterproof, and they tend to be more bulky and awkward to handle. However, with a splash cover, you can get around this problem and keep your pack contained in a bubble that protects all of your gear form those sudden rainstorms or the river you have decided to cross.

If you need to keep your hands free for clearing the trail, you may not want to deal with water bottles. You may prefer a hydration system. These systems can either be built into the pack or many packs have special compartments where a water bladder can be located with a hole for the drinking tube. This can be very helpful for staying hydrated during your hike. However, it is also important to know that the tube and water bladder may freeze if the temperatures are extremely cold.

No matter which features you like best about the different outdoor backpacks, you should realize that the most important one is the way it fits your body. Having all of the bells and whistles won’t matter much if the pack is uncomfortable because you won’t use it more than a couple of times. Always try on a backpack before you buy it and make sure that it fits you snugly and properly. Not every pack will fit every person correctly, so it is very important to shop around until you find the one that fits you.
