well, it slides in and out of a hole at the top and has a black thread attached to it, it’s very light and flat both ends, like a thin long cylindric shape.

Ah yes, that is actually for the koiguchi. After time the koiguchi (mouth) of your saya will wear down, and the habaki (metal piece between tsuba and blade) wont stick. This makes your katana fall out of the saya. That thin wooden stick is so you can repair the inside of the koiguchi so that it grips the habaki again.

you will want to keep that piece of wood in a cool (not dry) place till you need it.
