To turn different kinds of screw, you need to use the right mating tool for the job, a screwdriver. Drivers are very basic in design, consisting of a steel shaft made with a certain head or tip and a handle to provide a grip on the tool. Available in numerous sizes and with drive heads to match all types of screws, screwdrivers are among the most commonly used tools. They give the operator the mechanical advantage necessary to apply torque or rotational force to a fastener or some other type of machine element. Manual, electric and battery-powered screwdrivers are available.

Screwdriver heads are designed to match with the specifications of a particular type of screw, both in terms of size and drive head style. The shape of the head machined into the shaft of the screwdriver depends on what type of screw drive the fastener features. The two most common screw heads are slotted and Philips head. Nearly flat with a squared-off tip, slotted driver heads resemble a paddle. The kinds of screws it can torque depends on the width and thickness of the tip. Forming a perfect cross, Philips head drivers feature two perpendicular tips. Each of the four inner corners are slightly rounded outward, resulting in four equal arcs at the points of intersection.

Other common driver types feature the square-shaped Robertson head and the Frearson driver which is similar to a Philips head, but it is a smaller, perfect cross with one size to fit all screws. Specialty screwdrivers designed to work with other screws include mortorq, pozidriv and supadriv. These tools features unique, distinctly shaped heads. The mortorq driver features four wing-shaped tips, making it resemble a pinwheel when looked at straight down the tip. Pozidriv heads feature a second, albeit thinner cross positioned 45 degrees relative to the main crossing tips, but otherwise resemble Philips head drivers. Supadriv heads feature squared-off inner corners at the points where the crossing tips meet, a modification of the Philips head design.

For convenience, screwdrivers often feature magnetic heads to attract metal screws and hold them in place.
